Saturday night the Camden Bulldogs opened the 2016 varsity football season with a 49-27 victory over rival Lugoff-Elgin in a game delayed from Friday night due to weather, the 37th meeting between the two schools.

It’s the fifth consecutive win for the Bulldogs (1-0) over the Demons (0-1). Camden also extends their lead in the overall series to 30-7.

The scoring happened quickly for Camden in the first quarter. Lance McCray got the scoring started with a 4-yard touchdown run, capping a 7-play, 28-yard drive. Then on the ensuing Lugoff-Elgin drive, sophomore linebacker Tyler Maxwell returned an interception 75 yards for a score. Jericho Murphy added another Camden score after a 43-yard run following a Demon score. The Demons scored again before the break but missed the extra point and at half time the score was 21-13 in favor of Camden.

In the second half it was all Camden as senior quarterback Devin Beckley threw for two touchdowns and ran for another. Camden was able to pull away and keep LE’s offense at bay to secure the 49-27 victory.

Beckley completed 14 of 23 pass attempts for 181 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Murphy finished the game with 14 carries for 114 yards and 2 touchdowns and Avery Barnes caught six passes for 125 yards and a touchdown.

Camden will go on the road again next Friday night to take on North Central at North Central Stadium. Camden is 4-0 all-time against the Knights. Kickoff is set for 7:30 pm ET next Friday night.
