CAMDEN WINS AAA STATE TITLE 77-62 OVER GREER

51-Year Drought Finally Comes To An End As Dogs Roll Over Yellow Jackets

3/7/09

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Camden High Bulldogs started off slow but came back to defeat the Greer Yellow Jackets 77-62 at the Colonial Life Arena in Columbia on Saturday night to win the 2009 AAA State Boys Basketball Championship and end a 51-year drought between Boys state titles. Ironically, it was Greer that Camden defeated to win its other two state titles, in 1957 and 1958.

In a season that saw its only two losses to the same team (region opponent Darlington) Camden finishes the season with a 24-2 mark, a Region VI-AAA championship, a AAA Lower State Championship, and of course the State Title.

"It's been 51 years since we've done this, and I'd like to thank the community and all the support we've had throughout the season," said Camden Head Coach Ron McKie after the victory. "I give all the credit to the kids. They've worked hard in the offseason," said McKie. The championship is the first of his career for the 8-year Camden coach.

Greer started the game on a 10-0 run before Camden finally got on the board on an Evrik Gary free-throw near the 6:00 minute mark of the first quarter. After that Camden roared back to trail by only 2 at the end of the first stanza. In the 2nd, the Bulldogs turned up the awesome and never looked back on route to victory.

Josh Council had a season-high 34 points and Senior Evrik Gary added 23 more in his final game as a Bulldog. Senior guard Jay Council scored 10 and SaVonn Wingate had 6 points. T.J. Perkins and Terry Lee each had 2 points for Camden.

"It's a team thing. We've got to come out and play together as a team and that's why we won this game," said junior Josh Council in a post-game interview with WPUB radio. "Everybody stepped up and played their role," said Council.

State Championship T-Shirts are available at Sports Connection in Dusty Bend in Camden for only $10. Sports Connection is open Monday-Friday from 9 am until 5 pm.

State Championship Game DVD's are also available from KM Video Productions of Camden. To order your commemorative DVD complete with play-by-play audio, call (803)432-8796 or log on to www.kmvideoproductions.com.
