Camden Football Milestones
1894-1917
1894 - Intramural Football begins at the Camden Graded
School with two squads - the Athenians and the Spartans,
coached by Leonard T. Baker.
1895 - Camden Graded
School plays their first out-of-town game with a Columbia
football team.
1903 - Football is played at the
dedication of the high school on Laurens Street.
1917 -
Superintendent J.G. Richards becomes coach.
1920's
1920 - Team becomes known as Bull Dogs.
1926 - Camden
enters "B" Class competition, loses Lower State title game
to Mullins 21-0.
1927 - Lower State title game loss to
Batesburg-Leesville 19-2.
1928 - District 5 and 7
Champions. Lower State title game loss to B-L 14-13.
1929 - J.M. Villepigue becomes head coach. Zemp Field is
dedicated on November 7. State title game loss to Chester
19-13.
1930's
1931 -
STATE CHAMPIONSHIP (Class B) - over
Chester 32-7.
1933 - Upper state champions, state title loss to Johnston
20-15.
1934 - Lower state champions, state title loss to Great
Falls 21-6.
1936 -
STATE CHAMPIONSHIP (Class B) - over
Honea Path 26-0.
1937 - Class A Ranking, state title loss to Easley in heavy
rain and fog 13-7.
1940's
1940 - CHS band makes on-field marching debut.
1944 -
STATE CHAMPIONSHIP claimed due to
undefeated season, with no title game being played due to
war blackout and gas rationing.
1947 - First Homecoming Queen is crowned.
1950's
1956
- AA ranking.
1957 -
STATE CHAMPIONSHIP (Class AA) - over
Lancaster 13-6. CHS also wins state titles in
Boys' and Girls' basketball and baseball.
1960's
1963 - W.L. "Red" Lynch becomes first CHS player to return
as head coach
1964 -
STATE CHAMPIONSHIP (Class AA) - over
Easley 26-0. All class champions and named Best
defensive team in the nation. Perfect season, un-scored upon
in regular season.
1970's
1970 - Camden High and Jackson High consolidate in 1970-71.
Class AAAA.
1971 - Lynch steps down as head coach.
1972 - Billy Ammons, 1964 CHS quarterback, named head
coach.
1975 - Region 6-AAAA Champions. Loss to
Middleton 12-7 in First round of playoffs.
1976 -
Shrine Jamboree debuts at Zemp Stadium. Loss to Dillon 28-6
in playoffs.
1978 - Region 4-AAAA Champions. Win over
Middleton, win over Sumter but loss to Summerville 30-14 in
Lower State Championship.
1979 - Loss to Dillon 14-7 in
AAAA playoffs.
1980's
1980 - Region 4-AAAA Champions. Win over Conway, but loss to
Summerville 17-7.
1981 - Defeated Dreher, loss to
Hartsville in AAAA playoffs.
1983 - Region IV-AAAA
Champions. Undefeated regular season (10-0). Loss to
Walterboro 19-13 in second round of playoffs.
1984 -
Reclassified in AAA. Loss to Myrtle Beach in second round
playoffs.
1985 - Loss to Strom Thurmond 14-13 in AAA
playoffs.
1988 - Loss to Daniel 13-7 in second round of
playoffs.
1989 - Win over Byrnes, loss to Seneca 17-14
in second round of AAA Upper state playoffs.
1990's
1990 -
STATE CHAMPIONSHIP (Class AAA) over
Hilton Head 13-3. Defeated Daniel 27-7 in Upper
State Championship. 15-0 season.
1991 - 8-5 overall with 10-7 loss to state champ
Daniel in second round.
1994 - CHS Celebrates
100th year of football.
1995 - Loss to Berea
17-0 in AAA Playoffs.
1997 - Loss to Dillon 14-3
in Lower State playoffs. Billy Ammons steps down as head
coach.
1998 - Jimmy Neal becomes third former
CHS player to be named as head coach.
1999 -
Region IV-AAA Co-champions, loss to Marion 19-14 in second
round of Lower State playoffs.
2000's
2000 - Region IV-AAA Champions, defeated Marion 13-9 in
third round, but lost to Manning 7-0 in Lower State
Championship
2001 -
STATE CHAMPIONSHIP (Class AAA) over
Union 24-21 (OT). Defeated Newberry 34-14 in
Lower State Championship. 15-0 season.
2002 - State Runner-up (Class AAA). Title game loss to
Union 61-28. Defeated Dillon in Lower State Championship
42-7. 13-2 season.
2005 - Dogs reach playoffs for seventh straight season,
defeating Pickens 24-17 before falling to Greenville 45-42
in second round.
2008 - Dogs reach Lower-State semi-finals for fifth time
during Jimmy Neal's tenure at Camden.
2009- CHS Celebrates 115th year of football; claim 600th
school victory against Lakewood in Week 9; Head Coach Jimmy
Neal earns 100 victories at CHS; CHS Boys Basketball wins
AAA State Title
