Kellytown, S.C. - It was a wild and crazy night
to start the 2009 season for the Camden Bulldogs
Friday night. They headed to Hartsville to take on the Red Foxes in a
week zero game open their 115th season of football. Hartsville used a
28-point first quarter and added several more touchdowns to get a 56-38
win at Kellytown Stadium.
Their first score came on a 59 yard rush by Eric
Williams and then added another after Camden couldn’t hold on to the
ball of the ensuing kickoff. The score on that drive a 31-yard scamper
by Dre Scott. After Camden went three and out on their first drive of
the night, Hartsville quarterback Shawn Smith connected with Brandon
Beans for 61 yards to put the score up to 21 to 0. Camden finally got on
the scoreboard after a 10-play, 56 yard drive ended with a 14 yard
touchdown pass from Josh Council to Glenn Quattlebaum. The extra point
by Jacob Ansley was blocked. Hartsville added one more score in the
first quarter on an 83-yard pass from Smith to Beans. After one quarter
Hartsville led 28-6.
Hartsville scored first in the second quarter on a
36-yard pass from Smith to Beans again, then again with 7:22 remaining
in the first half on a 75-yard pass from Smith to Beans. Camden added
another score with 3:48 to play before the half on a 43 yard pass from
Council to Quattlebaum and again the two connected with 1:38 to go in
the first half on a 58-yard touchdown pass. But on the ensuing kickoff
Eric Williams ran for a 95-yard return to put the home team up 49-18.
The scoring wasn’t done in the first half though as Council passed to
Alvonta Jenkins from 4 yards out to push the score to 49-25 at halftime.
Camden scored first in the third quarter to make it
49-31 after an 18-yard pass from Council to again Quattlebaum.
Hartsville scored for the final time on the night after a 3-yard run by
Eric Williams following a Josh Council interception.
Camden scored once more at the 2:04 mark in the
fourth following an 11-play, 84 yard drive that saw SaVonn Wingate
scamper in from two yards out.
Glenn Quattlebaum was named the Sports Connection
Player of the Game. He finished the night with six catches for 152 yards
and four touchdown grabs. He also returned five kickoffs for 50 yards.
The senior with 202 all purpose yards on the night.
