Florence, S.C. - Thursday night the Camden Bulldogs (2-1) headed
to the Pee Dee to take on the West Florence Knights (0-2) at Florence
Memorial Stadium for the third game of the 2009 season. After a rough
start, the Bulldog defense dominated he Knights offense, allowing just
130 total yards on the night, to walk away with a 16- 7 win.
West Florence struck first, their only score of the
night, at the 6:45 mark of the first quarter. Quarterback Broddrick
Jones scored from one yard out following a 3-play drive that was setup
by a big return on a punt by Eric Driggers.
Camden however would fire back in the second
quarter at the 11:30 mark on an 8-yard rush by senior quarterback Josh
Council. That score coming on a 7-play, 76 yard drive. SaVonn Wingate
with rushes of 15 and 16 yards on the drive.
The teams would exchange possession for the rest of
the second quarter, and we went to halftime knotted up at 7 a piece.
Start of the third quarter following a Council interception, the Knights
found themselves inside their own five yard line. A false start penalty
took the Knights back to their two, and on the first play of the drive
Leon Richardson was taken down in the endzone for the rare Safety.
Jerel Robinson leading the way on that safety. At
that point Camden went up 9-7. On Camden’s ensuing drive following the
kickoff by Alex Howell, the Dogs took the ball 44 yards for another
score: this time a 7-yard run by Josh Council.
Camden would become stingy with the football in the
fourth quarter and actually ran out the clock on a 5 minute drive that
saw SaVonn Wingate run the ball 8 times for 89 yards. Council would
kneel the ball inside the West Florence 10 yard line and the Bulldogs
walked away with the win.
For his efforts on the night, defensive lineman
Jerel Robinson was named the Sports Connection Player of the Game. He
was the anchor for that defensive line all night with several tackles,
and of course the driving force in the safety in the third quarter that
turned the momentum fully in Camden’s direction.
The Bulldogs now 2 and 1 on the season will have a
bye next week as a result of playing a week zero game. They will go
again Friday, September 18th at Zemp Stadium when
Lugoff-Elgin comes to town for the 30th meeting between the
two in-county schools. West Florence 0 and 2 on the season. They will
host Lugoff-Elgin next Friday night.
