Camden, S.C. - Friday night marked Homecoming 2009 for Camden
High School as they took on the Andrew Jackson Volunteers. Camden
used a dominant performance in the first half by their defense and
special teams to lay down a 47-23 victory and improve to 3-2 on the
season.
On AJ’s first possession of the night a Trip
Rollings pass was intercepted by Sjahbar Stewart who returned the
ball 23 yards to the AJ 7. A SaVonn Wingate rush turned into the
first touchdown of the night for Camden, and after the extra point
was missed the Dogs led 6-0. Two possessions later Josh Council
connected with Alvonta Jenkins for a 50-yard touchdown pass, and
with the extra point Camden led 13-0. Then things got fun for CHS as
on the ensuing kickoff, Brayan Mendez caused a fumble at the 15 yard
line, and then Dominic Cook returned it for the score. At that point
it was Camden 20 and AJ 0.
After Camden blocked a long AJ field goal
attempt, TJ Perkins returned the ball 71 yards to the AJ 18, and
then Josh Council ran it in from 18 yards out, and at that point it
was Camden on top 27-0. Camden would add one final score before the
half as Council connected with Glenn Quattlebaum from 38 yards out
and Camden would go into the Locker Room up 34-0.
Second half AJ put some points on the board,
all three courtesy of Darrian Henderson. The first a 16 yard
scamper, then a 9 yard run, and finally a 5 yard run with just 48
seconds left to play in the ballgame. Camden would run out the clock
and walk away 47-23 winners. Josh Council finished the night with
163 yards passing and 3 touchdowns, and also had 39 yards on the
ground with a touchdown. SaVonn Wingate had 14 carries for 65 yards
and a touchdown.
Your Sports Connection Player of the Game:
Brayan Mendez. Mendez caused the fumble on that kickoff return that
led to a touchdown and really at that point turned the momentum in
Camden’s favor.
The Bulldogs stay at home again next week,
hosting the Crestwood Knights to open region play for 2009. Kickoff
at Zemp Stadium next Friday night at 7:30, and you can hear live
