Zemp Stadium - 2009 Region Opener

Camden, S.C.

Bulldogs Blank Crestwood 14-0 in Region VI-AAA Opener

10/3/09

Camden, S.C. – Friday night the Camden Bulldogs opened region play hosting the Crestwood Knights at Zemp Stadium. The Bulldogs defense stopped the Knights 4 times on 4th down and had a big night offensively from running back SaVonn Wingate to come out 14-0 winners and move to 1-0 in Region 6 of 3-A play.

The game started out a defensive struggle as both teams went 3 and out multiple times before Camden finally broke the scoreless tie. The Dogs on a 4 play, 26 yard drive, that was set up by fumble recovered by linebacker Zack Neal. Camden punched it in on a 2-yard run by SaVonn Wingate and the extra point by Jacob Ansley was good to put the Dogs up 7-0.

A few possessions later Camden would score again as Wingate ran in from 28 yards out with 4:25 before half time to go up 14-0. And that would be all your scoring on the night.

Second half though Crestwood moved the football well, but it wasn’t enough as the Camden defense held strong. Camden would put together a long drive in the fourth quarter that took off 6 minutes and 43 seconds that moved the ball all the way to the Crestwood 10 yard line.

Crestwood would get off 2 plays before the clock ran out, and Camden walked away 14-0 winners. On the night, Wingate would run the ball 26 times for 129 yards. Josh Council also had 13 carries for 64 yards. The Dogs with 252 total yards on the night, while Crestwood limited to just 172 total yards.

Your Sports Connection Player of the Game: Melquan Lee. The senior defensive back was in on many tackles, including those 4 stops on fourth down.
