Camden, S.C. -
Friday night the Camden Bulldogs improved to 7-2 on the season and
4-0 in region VI-AAA play as they took down the Lakewood Gators
38-13 on Senior Night at Zemp Stadium. With the win, Camden clinches
at least second place in the region and it sets up a showdown with
Marlboro County in Bennettsville next Friday for the region
championship.
Camden got on the board
early as a punt by Damon Myers was blocked and recovered by Sterling
Green in the endzone for a touchdown. Jacob Ansley’s extra point was
good to give the Dogs a 7-0 lead with 10:01 left to play in the
first quarter. On Camden’s first offensive play on the night after a
three and out by Lakewood, Josh Council ran for 43 yards to the
house and an extra point gave the Dogs a 14-0 lead.
Camden would add three
more points late in the first quarter when Jacob Ansley connected on
a 37-yard field goal, and after one it was the Dogs 17 and the
Gators 0.
Second quarter Lakewood
would get on the scoreboard after Johnny Welles ran in from four
yards out. The extra point made it 17-7. Camden would add another
late in the quarter when Josh Council connected with Glenn
Quattlebaum from 11 yards out and at half time your score was Camden
24 and Lakewood 7.
Third quarter SaVonn
Wingate would find the endzone twice. The first at the 7:44 mark
from four yards out, and then again with 5:52 to play in the third
quarter from four yards out. That score by Wingate was set up by a
big 54 yard punt return by Glenn Quattlebaum.
Lakewood made it a 38-13
affair after Dalvin Bracey ran 90 yards for the score. That extra
point attempt was blocked by Jerel Robinson.
Camden’s second team
would try to put together some long drives late and was able to eat
up enough clock to run down to triple zeros, and give the Bulldogs
the 38-13 win.
Council carried the ball
12 times on the night for 92 yards and a touchdown. Wingate 10
carries for 59 yards and two touchdowns. For his efforts, Jacob
Ansley was awarded the Sports Connection Player of the game. He was
5 of 5 on extra points and he had that 37-yarder in the first
quarter. He was also able to pin Lakewood deep in their own
territory with several touchbacks on kickoffs.
Camden now 7-2 on the
season and 4-0 in region play. It’s Camden’s 600th win in
school history. Head coach Jimmy Neal is now a single win shy of
reaching 100 wins in his career at the helm of the Bulldogs. He’s
99-46 in 12 seasons at Camden.
The Bulldogs will go on
the road next Friday night for a big region championship showdown
with the Marlboro County Bulldogs at McAlpine Stadium in
Bennettsville. Kickoff is at 7:30 and if you can’t make the drive
you can hear it all on KOOL 102.7 and kool1027.com beginning at
